With every new day, new tasks await for the members of Aious Formula Student Team from Indira Gandhi Delhi Technical University for Women (IGDTUW). Be it welding of the frame, or overhauling the engine, or buying components from automotive markets or hardware shops, or approaching companies for seeking support, the members head out promptly to complete their task. The Team, comprising of 24 girls pursuing Mechanical and Automation Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering, is participating in Supra SAE India 2014 event held at Madras Motor Sports Club, Chennai. This event requires teams from engineering colleges across the country to conceptualize, design, fabricate and market a prototype of a weekend autocross racer. The Competition takes part in two rounds- the virtual event, where experts from the industry judge the designs and project plan of teams and the main event, where the teams compete with their manufactured cars in various static and dynamic events. Such a competition challenges the young engineering minds to explore the nuances of how an industry functions and markets the product, thus giving an opportunity to students to come up with new ideas which can bring about innovation in the industry.
Aious Formula Student Team, first formed in the year 2008 as a collaboration between Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology (then IGIT) and Maharaja Agrasen Institute of Technology (MAIT) participated in FSAE Australasia 2008 and won the Cost Award in the event for producing a car with lowest budget. In the next few years the team that represented IGIT (currently known as IGDTUW) has participated in Supra SAE India 2011, winning the Cost Award and in 2012, ranking 39th among 102 teams that participated. Currently, the team is fabricating its 3rd car- IRYA, with Ms. Jayashree heading as the Team Captain for the competition.
This season the Virtual Round of Supra took place at KIIT, Bhubaneshwar from 17 to 21 September 2013 and Aious Formula Student Team secured second position. 100 teams have been shortlisted from 174 teams to showcase their car in the final event which will be held at Madras Motor Sports Club from 18th to 22nd July 2014.
The Aious FS team aims to design and manufacture a car that will show exemplary engineering skills, incorporating the practice of detailing the designs and ensuring conformity of manufactured product to the design. Their car, Irya will show exceptional performance in terms of acceleration, braking, handling and endurance. In a recent interview with Autosports India, when asked about the reason for the good performance of the team, the captain, Jayashree had the following words to say- “Persistence and team spirit are the key factors in these competitions. We have spent sleepless nights pouring over our designs to make them best. Meticulous planning of each day and constant support from parents and our esteemed sponsors are the reasons for our performance and we will aim to be our best at the event.”
