Tesla roadster was the first all-electric sports car to hit the production line by all-electric vehicle giant Tesla Motors. It was one and first of it’s kind and was officially revealed on July 19th 2006 in San Francisco International Auto Show.
The Roadster was in production from 2008 to 2012 during which a total of 2,400 were sold across 31 countries whereas the sports variant started rolling out in the year 2010. The roadster being in the top-notch of electric vehicles domain also gave a neck-to-neck battle to IC engine operated cars. It holds the World Distance Record of traversing 501kilometer at an average speed of 40kmph during the Global Green Challenge in Australia. Also, Tesla Roadster became the first electric vehicle to win the Monte Carlo Alternative Energy Rally and the first to win any Federation Internationale de l’Automobile sanctioned championship which beat 96 competitors for range, efficiency and performance in the 1,000 kilometer challenge.
The Roadster’s beauty was electrifying for it’s sleek and sporty design. The Roadster was carved with carbon fiber giving it a light-weight construction and had LED tail lamp. It’s monocoque chassis was constructed using resin-bonded and riveted extruded aluminum which gave Roadster it’s strength keeping it lighter. It’s wheels were made up of forged aluminum. The Roadster was available in different dashing colors.
Roadster was a beauty inside out. The interior contained leather-wrapped sport steering wheel to give the driver a sporty feel. Optional variants had the option of Leather seats in different colors.
The Roadster gave it’s customers the sheer pleasure of driving with four-wheel independent wishbone suspensions and co-axial coil spring telescopic dampers. Optional variants of Roadster Sport came with custom tuned adjustable suspension, dampers and adjustable roll bars.
The vehicle housed a monstrous 299HP 3-phase air-cooled Induction Motor in it’s rear compartment which delivered a maximum Torque of 270N-m. The motor of Tesla Roadster was hand-wound to ensure optimum performance and efficiency. With such a powerful beast sitting inside churning out maximum of 14,000rpm Roadster attained a top speed of 201 km/hr. It had an ability to accelerate from 0-97 kmph in just 3.7 seconds which gave it a distinctive status in the line of fastest accelerating vehicle in production line. This proved the Tesla can give a neck-to-neck battle to IC engine driven vehicles.
The Powertrain of Roadster was designed and Manufactured by Brog Warner. It was a single speed with a 8.2:1 overall gear ratio and a final drive of 3.1:1 The gear stick was similar to that of an automatic with P, R, N, D configuration.
The Roadster was powred by 6831 Lithium-Ion Cells enduring upto 394kilometer per charge giving an equivalence of 2Litre/100kilometer with a battery-to-wheel efficiency of 88%. The battery cells were standard laptop batteries connected together!! Imagine 6831 of your Laptop batteries driving the mighty Roadster. The battery pack of the Roadster took nearly 3 and half hour to get completely charged consuming 70 Amps and 240Volts from the supply using the Tesla high power connector.
Although now Tesla Roadster is discontinued but, during it’s reign it had set a benchmark in the field of all-electric sports vehicle.
