The International Engine Awards 2015 concluded on 17th June with BMW 1.5 Litre petrol electric hybrid topping the charts, ending the 3 year long victory streak by Ford’s 999cc three-cylinder turbo EcoBoost engine. To add to the spoils, the petrol electric hybrid and the i8 also won awards in the ‘Best new Engine’ and the ‘1.4 litre – 1.8 litre categories’.
In what was a very closely contested fight, the BMW’s petrol-hybrid motor ended Ford’s 1.0 litre EcoBoost engine dominance by a slender 7-point margin. However, Ford did have something to cheer about. Its 999cc EcoBoost engine was adjudged the best engine in the ‘Sub 1-litre’ category for the fourth consecutive year.
The BMW i8 engine was voted class winner for its BMW TwinPower Turbo three-cylinder petrol engine, while the overall drive unit of the BMW i8 claimed a further class win as the best new engine. Its combination of electric motor and petrol engine also earned it the overall victory. In the 2.5 to 3.0-litre displacement category, the M TwinPower Turbo six-cylinder in-line petrol engine of the BMW M3 and BMW M4 came out on top.
