Renault entry into low priced hatchback | Renault Kwid at Rs.2.56 lakh

French carmaker Renault has opened up a price war in the entry-level hatchback segment with the launch of an SUV-styled hatchback Renault Kwid, starting at an aggressive price of Rs 2.56 lakh, ex-showroom, challenging rivals such as Maruti Suzuki’s Alto and Hyundai’s Eon.

Priced Rs 30,000 lower than the segment leader Alto (Rs 2.89 lakhs) at the base and at least Rs 54,000 lower than South Korean car maker Hyundai’s Eon, Kwid has stepped up the game at the top end by offering first-in-segment features such as 7-inch touch-screen, Media-Nav system, digital instrument cluster, one-touch lane change indicator at a price of Rs 3.53 lakh, which no manufacturer is offering at this price point.

With this launch, Renault will expand its coverage to 80% of the Indian passenger vehicle market, up from 50% at present. “We expect the market size for the product like this to be 50,000 units a month and expect to get a significant share,” Sumit Sawhney, country chief executive officer and managing director, Renault India Operations.
