Dealerships of Renault India have started deliveries of the Renault Kwid, which went on sale last month.
The Kwid hatchback got off to a huge start with more than 25,000 bookings in just a few weeks. Dealers now say that the waiting time currently for the car is 3-4 months.
Of all the bookings received so far, statistics reveal that more than 35% of the customers are from Tier II and Tier III cities like Nagpur, Rajkot, Nashik, Ludhiana and Jalandhar, 40% of the customers are below the age of 28. It also shows that 15% of the buyers are women.
The reason for the Kwid’s success is due to its low price, SUV-like looks, high fuel efficiency and low cost of maintenance.
The Renault Kwid is powered by a 799cc, three cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 53 bhp and 72 Nm of torque. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and power is sent to the front wheels. the car weighs only 669 kgs. This allows it to return a fuel efficiency figure of 25.17 kms to a litre of fuel. The hatchback rides on 13 inch wheels
The city car is manufactured at the Renault-Nissan alliance plant in Chennai with a localization of 98 percent. It will be exported from here. At a later stage, the Kwid will get a more powerful 1.0 litre petrol engine and an automatic AMT transmission. However, a diesel engine is not expected to be launched.
The Renault Kwid starts at INR 2.57 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi) and goes up to INR 3.53 lakhs (ex-showroom, New Delhi). It competes against the Tata Nano, Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 and the Hyundai Eon.
